Last updated 2026-10-27

These are the terms for using Pronounced Pages. They are written to be read. By using the app or the site you agree to them; if you do not, please do not use the service.

The service

Pronounced Pages is a reading app for language learners. You read a book aloud in the language you are learning; the app listens, colours each word as it hears it, and shows a translation alongside. It runs in your web browser and can be installed to your home screen or desktop. Some parts need a network connection (speech recognition, translation through our service, coaching); the app shell and your imported books work offline.

The service is provided by the operator of pronouncedpages.com ("we", "us"). How we handle your data is described in the privacy page, which is part of these terms.

Accounts

  • You can use the shelf, import your own books and read aloud without an account.
  • An account is needed for translation through our service and for coaching. You sign in with a six-digit code we email to you; there is no password. You must be able to receive email at the address you use, and you are responsible for keeping that mailbox secure, because anyone who can read it can sign in as you.
  • A signed-in session lasts 180 days from your last use. You can sign out from the app's account section.
  • You must be at least 16, or the age at which you can agree to terms like these where you live, whichever is higher.
  • One account per person. We may close accounts that are used to abuse the service.

Plans and allowances

Three plans. The current prices and inclusions are always on the pricing page.

  • Free — the Pronounced Pages shelf; your own EPUBs read aloud with green and red feedback; 60,000 translated characters per calendar month through our service (about an hour of reading).
  • Reader — $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year: everything in Free plus full translation of your own books, with a fair-use cap of 30,000 translated characters per day and no monthly cap.
  • Pronounced — $19.99 a month or $159.99 a year: everything in Reader plus pronunciation coaching, with 10 hours of coaching audio per calendar month.

Allowances are counted on our server in UTC months and days. When you reach one, the feature pauses until the allowance resets and the app tells you when that is; nothing is cut off silently. Translation that runs on your device (desktop Chrome with a built-in translator) is not counted. Allowances do not roll over and are not refunded when unused. We may change the numbers; a reduction for paying subscribers takes effect at the start of their next paid period at the earliest.

Billing

  • Paid plans are recurring subscriptions, billed in advance either monthly or yearly, in US dollars. Any tax that applies is worked out at checkout, which shows the final amount before you pay.
  • Payment is taken by Stripe, our payment provider, acting as the merchant of record: Stripe sells you the subscription, handles your payment details and applicable taxes, and issues receipts. We never see your card number.
  • Your plan is upgraded when Stripe confirms payment, and it renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel.
  • If a renewal payment fails, we keep your plan active for a short grace period (up to seven days) while Stripe retries. If payment still fails, your account returns to Free and your books, positions and reading record stay where they are, on your device.
  • You can change plan, update your payment method and download invoices from the billing portal in the app's account section.

Cancellation and refunds

  • You can cancel at any time from the billing portal (account section → Manage billing). Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep your plan until the end of the period you have already paid for, and then return to Free. Nothing on your device is deleted.
  • Changed your mind? If this is your first purchase, email us within 14 days of the charge and we will refund it in full. Otherwise there are no partial refunds for unused time, except where the law where you live requires one.
  • Refunds are issued by Stripe to the original payment method.

Fair use

The allowances above are meant for one person reading. Do not share an account, script requests against our service, or use it to translate text in bulk outside the app. We may pause or close an account that does. The daily cap on paid plans exists so that one account cannot cost more than it pays for; it is generous for reading and we will raise it if real reading hits it.

Your books

  • You may import a book only if you own a copy of it and you are importing it for your own use; the app asks you to confirm this each time. You are responsible for having that right.
  • The app opens DRM-free EPUBs only. It never circumvents copy protection, and it refuses files that carry DRM. See Get books for where to find DRM-free books.
  • Imported books are parsed and stored in your browser on your device. We never upload, keep or redistribute the text; the only thing that leaves your device is the sentence being translated, when you use translation through our service, as described on the privacy page.
  • Books on the Pronounced Pages shelf are in the public domain in the United States and in Spain. They are provided for reading in the app; the source editions and licences are recorded in the project's provenance file.

Acceptable use

Do not:

  • use the service in a way that breaks the law where you are, or infringes anyone's rights;
  • try to get around allowances, sign-in, rate limits or the DRM check;
  • probe, overload or interfere with the service or its providers;
  • resell the service or use it to build a competing translation or speech service.

Changes to the service and these terms

We improve the app continuously and may add, change or remove features. We may change these terms; the date at the top shows the current version. A change that affects what you pay or what a plan includes will be shown in the app before it takes effect for you, and you can cancel if you do not agree. We may stop the service altogether with at least 30 days' notice, in which case unused paid time is refunded.

What we are responsible for

We provide the service as it is, and we do not promise it will always be available or free of errors. Speech recognition, translation and pronunciation scores are produced by machines and will sometimes be wrong; they are a learning aid, not an assessment you should rely on for anything that matters. Parts of the service depend on providers we do not control (your browser's speech recognition, Microsoft Azure, Stripe, Cloudflare), and we are not responsible for their outages.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything arising from the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or removes rights you have as a consumer where you live.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of [jurisdiction — operator to set], and disputes are heard by its courts, without affecting consumer rights that apply where you live.
